The Other Martin Luther King Speech

Posted on 21 February 2006 by jnu

Courtesy of The Boondocks television series on AdultSwim.

Let me be the one to say that I had HIGH expectations for the show.
I’ve had the comic strip running daily on my site since the beginning.

The animation is excellent, but I think it is geared towards another audience OR assumes that you never read the comic strip.

The writing is horrible and I think the casting for the voices is wrong. It’s not even funny.
You have John Witherspoon, (the father in FRIDAY) doing the voice as the grandfather, doing jokes from his role in FRIDAY. 7 out of 10 times the cartoon isnt even funny.

But THIS episode “Return of the King” is a gem. See this final scence for yourself

If for some reason you cant see the video and big PLAY button,

24/The Shield and Valentines

Posted on 21 January 2006 by jnu

The month of January flew by and February is almost here…

You know what that means?
“Black History” Month which of course will be overshadowed by Valentines Day which means
valentines day flowers , gift baskets , diamond necklaces and if youre LUCKY you might need to consult a Viagra Lawyer.

Two of the best shows on television began their new seasons this month:
“24″ and “The Shield”, both on Fox Networks, which I watch on my DirecTV which is also owned by News Corp…who’s my pimp?

Valentines falls on a Tuesday so I will be watching The Shield. The day before will be “24″

A new season of “24″ began last week, let me catch you up.
24

  • Jack had assumed a new identity.
  • Within the first five minutes the beloved ex-President, David Palmer, was shot in the throat and killed! I literally had to put down my wine and cup my mouth with my hand. shocked. (This is why Colin Powell did not and will not run for President)
  • Then, two minutes later Michelle Dressler was blown away, and her husband
  • Tony Almeida, was “critically injured”. this is the same man who was shot in the neck two seasons ago, and kept working only two hours after surgery. He’s a trooper, he’s not dead.
  • Within twenty-five minutes Jack was in action, hijacking a helicopter to save Chloe
Jack shoots the sniper who assassinated David Palmer, after a full confession.
  • Best line so far:

“The only reason you’re still conscious, is because I don’t want to carry you.”

The last episode ends up with terrorist taking over Ontario International Airport, with Jack hiding out in the ceiling.

(didn’t Bruce Willis do this D.C.in Die Hard 2?)
Jack uses his SPRINT TREO 650 to send pics of the bad guys back to CTU HQ.
    null
Then uses it to blow up one of the terrorist explosive vest by triggering it via a change in the frequency and a phone call.
(I have to try with mine)

Good Times-”Ain’t we lucky we got ‘em”

Posted on 23 July 2005 by Jonn Nubian

Woke up this morning and remembered that TV LAND was showing a “GOOD TIMES” marathon ALL weekend.

It will then become part of the regular schedule EVERY night @ 10pm :D

This is one my FAVORITE TV shows of all time and I’m glad it’s back on the air.
A little “GOOD TIMES” history for those that don’t know:

Good Times aired on CBS from February 1974 through August 1979.

Good Times follows the challenges and joys of the close-knit Evans family–patriarch James, mother Florida, eldest son and accomplished amateur painter J.J. (James Evans, Jr.), brainy and beautiful daughter Thelma, and youngest son Michael, a political and social activist–who live together in a high-rise housing project on the South Side of Chicago.

Audiences first met Florida as the no-nonsense MAID (housekeeper) on the series MAUDE
(starring Golden Girl Bea Arthur), which was produced by Bud Yorkin and Norman Lear.

Good Times was the FIRST prime-time series that featured a strong black man at the head of a close-knit lower-middle-class black family.

The show took an honest look at the reality of life in the urban Projects, and tackled social and political issues around race, poverty, unemployment, inflation, crime and addiction–hot button issues that cut across 1970s America.

Art aficionados may recognize J.J.’s paintings as the work of artist Ernie Barnes.
Credited as the founder of the Neo-Mannerism movement by art critic Frank Getlein, Barnes is widely regarded as one of the foremost American figurative painters and the leading African-American artist living today.

The show’s producer Norman Lear subsequently commissioned Barnes to paint a series of original pieces for Good Times, and what would become Barnes’ most famous work, Sugar Shack, was featured in the show’s opening credits for four years. For more information about Ernie Barnes and his work, you can visit Barnes’ website at www.erniebarnes.com

Next update: The Good Times theme song lyrics (thanks to Dave Chapelle)

    Eyes on the Prize

Posted on 06 February 2005 by jnu

I’m still in SHOCK over the passing of Ossie Davis.
I’m glad I got to say hello to him last year at Spike Lee’s “She Hate Me” screening.
Even though Al Sharpton sat behind me and as I was leaving rn into Lynn Whitfield and Chris Rock.
I have to say I was really starstruck like DAMN, that’s Ossie Davis!
Make sure to watch the premiere of original documentary “UNSTOPPABLE: A Conversation with Melvin Van Peebles, Gordon Parks and Ossie Davis” for 8 p.m., Sunday, February 13, 2005 on Black STARZ!

    There is a saying:
Less than 1% of the world population has access to internet,50% never touched a telephone.
Which is mostly TRUE than FALSE.
Moreso for even watched cable television or been to the cinema.
I bet it the same for :
    Eyes on the Prize.
Hands down, THE most comprehensive and revered civil rights documentary ever made.

But it’s illegal for makers of the civil rights documentary “Eyes on the Prize” to put it on DVD or show it in public. Why???
Mainly because licensing fees for the song “Happy Birthday,” (yeah, you know THAT song) which appears in footage of a group of people singing to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
I used snippets of this footage for a documentary I produced “Brown Eyed Intelligence”
Peace to Orlando Bagwell and the people over at Blackside.
Which brings me to get out the information about an online/public screening initiative.

On Febraury 8th there is a huge online initiative to screen the film in public AND several sites are making it available for download for FREE.
    Get more detailed information here
It provides more information about gettiing public screenings in YOUR area.

I heard Amazon has the whole series on VHS for $1,000.
    That’s crazy!

    MLK Aftermath/WHCR Interview

Posted on 19 January 2005 by Jonn Nubian

Moving on from MLK day I was shocked to see a commmercial for the furniture store Kavanaugh was having a
“Martin Luther King Day Sale”. (???)

That’s just plain tacky no matter how you slice it.

In other news I read that Rob Blair of KTNV-TV, weatherman for a Las Vegas television station got fired for saying:

“For tomorrow, 60 degrees, Martin Luther Coon King Jr. Day, gonna see some temperatures in the mid-60s.”

I guess it’s the mid-1960′s in this and a lot of people’s minds.
    Isn’t it 2005 already?

It was cold as I don’t know what last night and the only reason why I was walking in -5 degree weather was for an improptu in-studio radio interview at WHCR 90.3 FM “the voice of Harlem”.
    wchrfm012005
It was to promote (shameless plug) the new album “Music for Music Lovers” Vol. 1
(in stores March 2005) on the RHYTHM AND SOUL show every wednesday from 12am-2am if youre up that late/early.

Peace to MARCO NOBLES for a great interview.

    Brown Sugar

Posted on 10 October 2002 by jnu

Been out of town for a few days., luckily I downloaded a few episodes of the
“Justice League” for the long train ride back. That cartoon is the best in years.
They actually present it in “widescreen” format just like the “Sopranos”.

Easing back in Gotham, I remembered I got a pass to an advance screening of the movie:
    “Brown Sugar”.
    bsugar.01 (38k image)

Good movie. Another comedy-drama -love-story joint.
Is it me or is it a requirement that these types of movies MUST star Sanaa Lathan?
It’s essentially “Love and Basketball”, but it centers around the music industry.
The soundtrack is pretty good, currently in heavy rotation over here.
Overall it’s a great homage to Hip Hop (or what it used to be)

Another footnote: It was one of the first films to go into principal production after
9/11. One exterior shot reflects this is a good way, its almost reverent.

Afterwards on the way home ( I was so tired).
I was approached by a talent coordinator to be on the television show
    “Change of Heart”

You think I should go on the show? I never watched it, so i don’t know much about it….

    ….Stay Tuned.

    Tyson Weekend

Posted on 10 June 2002 by jnu

    The weekend is over.
First starts off with the Friday night screening presented by
    ImageNation up in Harlem.
The films were “SPARK” starring Terrence Howard which ran much too long for an independent feature. 100 minutes????
I was really interested in seeing Tyren’s (Grfx) music video projected. It’s for his single
“Summer Luv” from his album. He’s all singing with the umbrella on some Force MD’s ish.
BUt hey it’s cool. Also “I am Ali” produced/directed by Dream Hampton and starring
Ishmael Butler from the group Digible Planets…its “cool like that” :)
A short film of only 17 minutes but very well done and shot on DV no doubt.
    Speaking of DV….
I have not been in the mood to go see Star Wars:Episode 2 “Attack of the Clones.”
I got the hook up from my connect who gets holds of “screener” copies.
So I have it the film on DVDfor the price of a movie ticket.
I threw it in the player and skipped through a few scenes.
The dialog seemed so wack..oh well. I will watch the whole thing this week to get the full effect.

Ok, so after the screening we head to the last friday party at Gustavino’s.
It was cool. They tried to be on some crazy VIP ish because Jay Z was there.
It was good because I ended up running into some people I have been trying to track down for the film project. Jay Z was escorted past me while I was talking to someone so I missed a glimspe of his Audemars Piquet watch that cost a million dollars. Thats right….$1 million dollars (as Dr. Evil would say)

The next day I’m invited to a fight party..Tyson and Lewis.
It happened to be at GoldCrest Post.
Which is owned by Nick Quested the music video director.
There is a 52 seat screening room, although it was packed and I didnt get a seat I saw the fight projected on a giant screen. Pras from the Fugees and Fa 5 Freddy were there too and happened to have seats…I guess celebs know when to get it when the getting good.
    sub_screening (11k image)

Tyson WAS my man. I mean despite biting Holyfield’s ear off, he WAS still my man.
I look at it as the dude is paid to fight. Not a spokeman or be a Revered in Holyfield’s case.
Or try to rap or sing like Roy Jones or De la Hoya. Come on.
Anywho, someone described it as seeing your best friend become a crackhead.

{{popup tyson.jpg tyson 205×300}}tyson (11k image) [click pic for larger image]

    That’s how I felt.
Tyson is SOOOO wack to me. I think if he was walking down the street I wouldnt even say hello.
he didnt even try. What was all the talk for????
He is all washed up. He hould retire, join the WWF, get couseling..whatever..he just shouldnt fight anymore.

    {{popup tyson5.jpg tyson5 299×210}}tyson5 (13k image) [click pic for larger image]

And if he couldnt get any worse the him LOSING….I lost my cellphone there.
There is nothing like the feeling of losing your cellphone.
Then I felt like Pee Wee’s Big Adventure when his bike got stolen and he is walking around and everybody is riding a bike. It being NYC, everyone is on their cellphone.
    I think I even saw a homeless guy on a cellphone :)
I called my phone thinking someone would answer and say “hello I found your phone”
    Yeah right.
I went to get a replacement. It turns out Sprint is discontinuing the Motorola Talkabout.
Picking out a new cellphone is like picking out a new pair of shoes.
    Any phone just wont do.
That is the only model I know that can sync with Outlook.
You dont think I typing in all those numbers again. I’d rather just hook the cable up and download them into the phone. My technology software or hardware has to be robust:

    ro?bust Pronunciation Key (r-bst, rbst)
    adj.
Full of health and strength; vigorous.
Powerfully built; sturdy. See Synonyms at healthy.
Requiring or suited to physical strength or endurance: robust labor.
Rough or crude; boisterous: a robust tale.
Marked by richness and fullness; full-bodied: a robust wine.

    ..Or like my coffee.

On my way on the subway which began the evening…a guy was walking in front of me,
the back of his shirt read:

“The fullness of life lies in dreaming and manifesting the impossible dream” -Sri Chimney

    Soul Music First

Posted on 05 April 2002 by jnu

    Soul Music First:
I figured out its best going out during the week (if you can)
I ws on list at Gemini Lounge, by some new media types/lawyers, but was walking by “Nightingale’s” where something caught my ear.
It was an open mic/poetry “Guerilla::words” hosted by Brian Buno.
Turns out I missed Reg E. Gaines (remember him in “Higher Learning”?)
QYORKS (queens if youre not up on the lingo) KNOWA LAZARUS. A filipino MC.
    and DJ KUTTIN KANDI.:: www.kuttinkandi.com
She is pretty nice on the ones and twos. Check her site out.

Percee P, a well known “underground old skool” MC performed too.
I spoke to him afterwards and bought his CD “Then and Now”.
One of his tracks is being used in a film, and he hit me off with the directors info.
All in the name of collab, everythings bueno.
His CD is hot! I usually get mad skeptical when some artist came at me on the street and wants me to buy his ish.
The last time I did that some dude was in front of FatBeats, asked what I was listening to on my walkman. De La Soul:AOI:BIONIX.
He tells me he likes De LA too, assures me his tuff is on some underground coolness.
Goes by the name “Sdaerd”. I bought it for $5. Production was semi-tight.
Which means if you are reading this, or I see you on the street, you owe my $2 dollars on the real.

Anywho, the performances made my night and I went home.
    Next night, Wednesday, Downtime.
I was blessed with a performance from Madame Isreal.
Some refreshing R&B Soul Funk. I want to work with them in some capacity.
They worked with Probe, who did some production on the Amy Douglas and The Industry Standard album, I did the site, it is linked under Fam/Affiliates.

From there SPA, “Soul Music First”. Qool Marv was spinniing in the white room.
I must have walked up to the DJ Booth 3 times and typed in my Blackberry what he was playing.
I know am downloading the ultimate Funk/Soul/Rare Groove joint.
I know my afro will be picked to spherical perfection while listening to this one.
“Smilin Billy Suite’ which was used on NAS “One Love”.
Free good entertainment during the week.

None of that syrupy wait in line and be cute ish the clubs be on the weekends.
I save the weekend for sipping wine, eating cheese and writing, reading, and creating.

I caught Russell Simmons on Neil Cavuto yesterday.
They were of course discussing the financial dominance of HipHop in the industry.
They also talked about the negative aspects too. (of course)
I can’t knock Russell though. I got my personal Russells story.
I first met him when George Jackson introduced us at UBO.
He showed up classic Russell, Phat Farm gear and shelltoe Adidas.
Andre Harrell was behing him on the phone.
I was in the ‘screening/encoding room” which we set up temporarily at the time.

George Jackson: …meet Jonn Nubian, he is heading all of our Streaming Media initiaves.
    Russell Simmons: Whats up.
    Me: Whats up.
George Jackson: In the up coming months we are going to be doing…
Russell: Interupting, yeah whatever, just show me the shit I came to see.
They went in the next room where George showed him the Flash stuff we were workiing on.
The proposed Bruce Lee series, the Heather Hunter BulletProof Diva Series, etc.
Then it clicked..why is George showing it to him????

The Buzz circulated around the office that HE was there.
Some people thought it was cool. Like when Muhammad ALi ws there, when Jennifer Lopez and Puffy was there, etc. It came to be pretty regular for me.
Except when Lynn Whitfield the actress, was looking over my shoulder one day.
Only it didnt click he was her.
She was so fine, I said to myself she looks like Lynn Whitfield only better.
She then said, Hello my name is Lynn Whitfield, I’m a friend of George’.
    Duh on me that day.
Anywho, a week later the head animator (who worked on Beavis and Butthead) quit.
To work on what was soon to be 360HipHop started by Russell.
When it launched it knocked a lot of sites out the box, and had some edgy flash animation…hmmmm.
Months later, George died. Russell sells 360HIPHOp to BET for $10 Million.

Fast forward present day, December 2001. I buy Rusell’s book “Life and Def” on the street while uptown.
You think I bought that joint for $24.95. I learned the game in NYC.
NEVER BUY AT RETAIL COST. And I learned that the city itself makes the alternative very easy.
A little secret, you can get new books at Amazon.com prices in like the upper 70′s/Columbus circle area.
Go up past that like Harlem and they just sell Terry Mcmillan and Ice Berg slim novels.
Go below that like in midtown and they sell childrens coloring books.
So I breeze the the book in a day. I almost didnt get it since it had a foreword by Nelson George.
I got some unresolved semi-beef with him. I sent him an email. He boast on his site he has 2 email address..(whoa)
Hey Nelson, remember me? Sony Studios, screening room, advanced screening of
“Croutching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”. I was sipping on the comp wine and shrimp with my peeps.
Told you I admired your work. Your response: “yeah, ok” on some Bougie ish.
    That’s right you read it:
JNU on some straight up 100% Grade A First Generation Hateration towards another.
(I don’t believe Mary J wrote that word in a song, it all bueno though, I actually incorporated it into my vocab)

Ok. So I read the book. Have the book in my bag and on the way to a meetiing see a flyer that he is doing book signing at Barnes/Noble.
I finish my meeting and go. He seemed like he was in the groove. Probably something on some Def Comedy Jam: “Thanks for coming, God Bless” like he ended his book with.
He asked me my name. I told him and I mentioned that George Jackson introduced.
It seemed to conjure some memory or inner guilt, whatever it was, he paused.

He asked me what I was up to. Nothing I said.
(In fact I am preparing a paradigm shift on the whole industry and to rid it of all the BS)
We shook hands. That was it.

He ended up signing my book: “It was a pleasure meeting you again-Russell”
We will see if he shows up in my film.

OK. I won’t end this joint with that.
    Here is a gem:
