Tribeca Film Fest/Tesla Model S

Posted on 05 May 2009 by jnu

It’s Been awhile since I posted an actual blog.
Posting from my blackberry via Twitter to Flickr+Facebook+Myspace, Frienfeed, etc-pretty much serves the purpose to document what I’m up to and let people know what’s going on with me in real time.

Blogging seem so…2005

Since I only snapped a few pics, no signal in some places and acorrupted blackberry OS-no way to tweet-I figured a blog post was past due and necessary.

:)

First up, last Wednesday April 29, I was invited to the private viewing of the Tesla Model S at the IAC Building.

Tesla Model S Tesla Model S

I met Evgrrl (Green Technology+Bikinis-hmm) Shannon -who introduced me to Chris Paine, the producer/director of Who Killed the Electric Car,( if you have’nt seen the documentary, shame on you!)Elon Musk , chairman of Tesla Motors.
Elon was on David Letterman that night and it was cool to that he was in attendance when the show aired.

Here is the full interview:

Dave is hilarious, hoarse voice and all.

Of course, I had to get myself IN the Tesla Roadster.
Jnu in Tesla Roadster
I will ut my order in as soon as that big $ deal comes through!
:)

The next night was the First Annual Karavan 1st Anniversary party and right around the corner the Kodak Tribeca Film Fest Party-Karavan was cool. Bollywood is bigger and beyond Slumdog Millionaire for sure.

The pics pretty much tell you how the Tribeca party was.

In between the fun and drinks I did meet someone from YOUTUBE and managed to have a great conversation about the new Screening Room that they started-Full length features on Youtube-

Good news and even better opportunities on the horizon.

Heath Ledger

Posted on 25 January 2008 by jnu

So the other day I go around the corner from the office for a brisk walk and some coffee.
I see a few people with video cameras setting up and just looking across the street.
There are 3 NYPD police cruisers and officers guarding the door.
So I ask: What’s going on?
Guy with video camera: Don’t know, but it must be something if 3 cop cars are there.
Me: Is an event? are they guarding someone
Guy with video camera: I don’t know

Just then some other people show up, they look like reporters, taking notes, making a bunch of calls on there cellphones.
Then I hear, its Heath Ledgers apartment and he has been found dead.
More people gather, and overhear the same thing.
A women walks by, and says” Heath Ledger died in the furniture store?”
No! someone says, “His apartment is right next to it”

Just then, MY cellphone rings and the person asked me: “Did you hear Heath Ledger was found dead?”
Me: I know, I’m right in front of his apartment….
soho1

There is all these paparazzi here.
At that moment a photographer walks up to me and says: “We are PRESS Photographers.”

Anywho.

Just then, News Trucks from all the major television stations pull up and park.
I’m explaining the scene over the phone.
As the cameraman opens the other side of the van, he hears me and says :
“Yeah, they just announced it on the news, but we are about to PUT it on the air in 5 minutes”

soho2

All I could think was :
1. I hope his role as Joker in the Batman movie opening this summer is good.
2. My coffee is cold by now.

See, I actually met Heath Ledger in 2005.
It was at a BAFTA screening for Brokeback Mountain.

He along with the writers and director Ang Lee did a Q & A after the film.

He seemed like a nice guy, a little distant (as most actors are) and not too perceptive of what all the fuss was about the movie. Overall aloof.

I enjoyed him much more in Casanova which came out later that year.

Niggy Tardust + Nine Inch Nails

Posted on 30 October 2007 by jnu

The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust
A project by Saul Williams, produced by Trent Renzor of NIN.
Saul told my partner Tyren once that he wouldn’t need music to get heard.
I don’t know about that, but this definitely prove that he doesn’t need a record label.

Head over to www.niggytardust.com for all the details.

The long story short:
Users can download a 192kbps MP3 version of the entire album for free, or pay $5 to support the artist and be given the choice of downloading 192kps MP3 version, 320kbps MP3 version or lossless FLAC version.

This what Trent Renzor had to say:

There are obvious similarities in how Radiohead just released their new record and the way we’ve chosen to. After thinking about this way too much, I feel we’ve improved upon their idea in a few profound ways that benefit you, the consumer. You obviously will be the judge of this in the end. One thing that IS very different in our situation is that Saul’s not the household name (yet!) that Radiohead is, and that means we need your support on this more than ever. If you like what you hear, spread the word.

Saul Williams not a “household” name? In what households?
He was the star of the movie Slam, which won both the Sundance Festival Grand Jury Prize and the Cannes Camera D’Or, introducing Williams to international audience.
His album Amethyst Rock Star was produced by Rick Rubin.

This just proves my point that with traditional and non-traditional promotion, this will be THE way music will be released by both independent and major artist, and killing the preferred CD format at the same time.

Black Superhero Music (Jay-Z “roc boyz”)

Posted on 25 October 2007 by jnu

jzdenzl

I found this track in my inbox a few weeks ago and have been bumping it in my mp3 player almost everyday. The horns are so damn catchy. Jay-Z calls it “black superhero music…”

It’s from Jay-Z’a new album “American Gangster”, music inspired from the film of the same name starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe.

Sicko

Posted on 21 June 2007 by jnu

sicko
I screened Micheal Moore’s new movie “Sicko” this past weekend.

It investigates the American health care system with a focus on the behavior of large health insurance companies and contrasts the U.S. system with those of other countries with universal health care coverage.

I must say while not as powerful as ‘Fahrenheit 9/11″, it does have the same lasting impact.
A guy here in America gets 2 fingers cut off and because of his insurance he is given a CHOICE to get his index finger put back on for $18,000 or his ring finger for $12,000 NOT BOTH.
While a guy in Canada get all 4 finger sliced off and has them all put back for FREE.

At the end of the film he takes some people without adequate healthcare to Havana, Cuba.
One woman who was a 9/11 worker has lung problems and her prescription for asthma pills is $120/per bottle.
He Cuba she can get the SAME EXACT prescription for .05 CENTS

Looking at how universal healthcare WORKS in other countries like Canada, France and the UK makes you wonder what is really up in this country.

Micheal Moore is a true auteur and I’m glad I had the opportunity to meet and his and get his advice/insight to a film project I’m working on.

Everyone should go see this movie

SICKO opens in theaters nationwide June 29!

Oscar Worthy

Posted on 04 December 2006 by jnu

This weekend I screened these films all in the comfort of home:
Another reason to love the internet
Much better than getting the bootleg on thr street for $5 and better quality too.

:)

babel
Babel
Good movie, think of “Crash” but more international and sparse the way everyone is related somehow. This will get a a Best Picture nod for sure. A few loose ends though:
What was in the note he read at the end?) and, standing naked on the balcony takes her Dad’s hand and embraces him?
Why did her Mom commit suicide? Did she know or suspect incest? Did she shoot herself after Dad and Chieko went on the hunting trip; or during?
Is that why he gave his gun away?
Or maybe the fact that its still making me ask these questions days after I saw it, make it an even better film?

runningRunning with Scissors
Written and Directed by Ryan Murphy, creator of Nip/Tuck. (what more can i say)
If you think you had a rough childhood and a dysfuntional family, watch this film and be happy it didnt happen to YOU.

Expect nominations for Best Picture and Annette Bening for Best Actress.

casino
Casino Royale
No Oscar nominations but one of the best James Bond movies ever made.
Casino Royale gives the audience a glimpse at the man behind the martini.
He hates, loves, and hurts because he is human.
James Bond is not a machine without emotion, he does what he must to get the job done, but that does not mean he enjoys it.

2 weeks later

Posted on 27 September 2006 by jnu

A lot can happen in 2 weeks. I got a Tivo after a nearly successful failure of building my own PVR from an old computer , a tv capture card and some open source software.

It feels so good and do other things without being a slave to sit down and watch television at a particular time with all the commercials.

I even was able to catch the new Fantastic 4 cartoon, which at said time of braodcast I was sleeping.

I even have the unit hooked up to the web so if i think of something to record I can tell the tivo to do from my treo before getting on the subway or anywhere where I have access to the internet.

The Vice.Lounge free download “campaign” we started got us over 3,000 myspace friends and even MY myspace page got a little more friendly as well. All when didnt even need Internet marketing San Diego

I even plotted out the playlist for the podcast “Winter/Spring Collection” and this site (Me) got nominated for a Black Web Award the in Category of Best Personal Website by an Individual!

The awards celebrate African, African American and Caribbean excellence online in over 100 categories, and over 2,000 unique nominations from 24 countries.

To paraphrase one of my favorite rappers Murs, that means:
“I’m greater than your grandfathers’s father”

I hope they got the name spelled right by the time you all read this but still vote for me by clicking here:

Black Web Awards Lifestyles Ballot

Thank you for your support!!!!
Putting the finishing touches on our first music video for the song “Pillows” which has been getting much play online and also in Italy thank to RadioPellenera and features vocals from yours truly…lol

The video is actually a re-work of a scene where the instrumental of the song is actually used in the film “No Problema” directed by Rich Williams
