I attend quite a few conferences and absolutely HATE carrying around booklets or paper handouts to find out whats going on.

It’s 2010 and I was so pleased about the Internet Week NY App which kept me up to date with everything going on with the conference.

I was so excited and then throughly disappointed at THE NEXT HOPE conference lat July.

You would figure an app designed for a HACKER conference would be slick and chock full of information-it turned out to be poorly designed and altthogh having it installed on my hacked Iphone_ I found myself missing some very interesting panels because  I had to thumb through numerous pages in the conference booklet to find out what was going on-(true story)

It is called Tetherberry- basically this application allows you to thether your blackberry to your laptop and use it as a modem to connect to the Internet.

I downloaded the desktop install to my laptop and downloaded the application direct from my blackberry.

The installation to my Blackberry Curve 8320 downloaded and installed without a hitch.

However, the desktop app was going smooth, until it a prompt came up and said it would need to install the new desktop version 4.7. 

I have been using version 4.6 simply because I didnt feel the need to upgrade. I figured what the heck and let the Tetherberry setup do it’s thing. (more on this later on)

After the install, I followed the instructions and disconnected my current network connections.

I ran the Tetherberry desktop and blackberry apps respectively, the desktop prompted me to connect my device to the usb cable and BOOM! I was on the Internet via my laptop.

(Currently, there is no option for Bluetooth , but they are looking to support that in the future)

Surfing speeds were much faster than dialup, not quite dsl. I used to use a similar program for the Palm Treo on the Sprint 3G network, and would get DSL speeds.

 I am on T-mobile now-so its like Apples and Oranges.

There are many factors such as your connection to the network and location that will either increase /decrease your connection speed.

Overall, if you have your laptop and happen to be in an area with NO FREE Wifi or don’t want to pay for it. and need to get on the Internet-than this is ok for just that and checking your email.

Don’t even think about downloading  bittorrent files or moving any huge files via FTP. 

The downside, they shutoff the beta and are offering it until March 12 for $39.99-

I’m wondering how much more it will be?

For what the app does, it’s very expensive, especially since we live in a world where Wifi is available almost anywhere and most of the time for FREE.

 So after I tested it out, I had to reboot.

I wanted to backup my blackberry and found out that during the install the Tetherberry desktop installation did not install Desktop Manager for Blackberry 4.7.

It completely wiped out 4.6 and did not do a proper upgrade.

I had to reinstall the DM.

There is no Mac OS or Linux support as well.

To me, this  more of an emergency application.
